Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Overview from Mayo Clinic
November 29, 2025 – Enrico Santagati
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is extremely common as men age—affecting roughly 30% of men by age 60 and about half of men by age 80. The prostate sits just below the bladder, and when it enlarges, it can compress the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body). This narrowing can lead to symptoms such as weak stream, urgency, frequency, and nighttime urination.
The Mayo Clinic explains that BPH itself isn’t cancer, but the symptoms can significantly impact quality of life. Treatment options depend on prostate size, age, overall health, and how severe the symptoms are. They range from lifestyle adjustments and medications to minimally invasive procedures and surgery. Choosing the right approach usually involves evaluating symptom severity, prostate anatomy, and patient preference.
